Göteborgs Konserthus Chaplin Songs
Hear soprano Camilla Tilling in Daniel Nelson’s award-winning Chaplin Songs, a musical take on the political satire The Great Dictator. The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and conductor Andrew Manze also present Alfvén’s Symphony No. 3.

The Great Dictator (1940) was Chaplin’s first sound film and his response to an era characterised by Nazism and fascism. In the final scene, he gives a passionate speech for peace in which he urges the soldiers to stop the war: “Let us fight to free the world – to do away with national barriers – to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance.”
These words were the starting point for Swedish composer Daniel Nelson’s Chaplin Songs – a musical reflection of both the speech and the relevance of the entire film: “In a time when the foundations of democracy are threatened both by individual people and by entire ideologies, Chaplin Songs is my way of re-telling the message to which Chaplin gave voice in the film’s speech: if we do not preserve democracy, we are all doomed,” says Nelson.
As soprano soloist, we hear the acclaimed Camilla Tilling, who also gave the premiere performance in 2022 of this award-winning work.
Hugo Alfvén’s Symphony No. 3 has its own Gothenburg-based history, as it premiered in this city in 1906, led by Alfvén himself. Nordic romance and continental joie de vivre are united here. He dedicated the work to his wife, Marie Kröyer.
