Haydn in two different stages of his career, just over 20 years separate the two, just as they separate the innovative visionary from the experienced doyen. And despite everything, people are surprised by how similar they are: spirited, curious, exploratory. Schumann, on the other hand, turns inwards in search of true expression. The whimsical Cello Concerto is an example of the balance between solid ground and swaying bridges.
The devoted soloist Julian Steckel has won several international competitions and possesses the musical capacity demanded by Schumann in order to deliver a sterling performance. Intermezzo: Anton Webern’s strangely beautiful string quartet from 1905 – a forgotten gem.
